Chapter 22

As he leans back in his leather office chair, cigarette smoke coming from his mouth as he takes a deep exhale of the stick full of nicotine he wonders how he got so deeply involved with you. At first, it was supposed to be nothing more than a way to piss Ran off. Something he enjoys doing daily. He would gain your friendship only to rub it in Ran’s face, then drop you. But then you ruined it, you had to go and make his heart throb. With your silly jokes, insults that hold no weight, and your loyalty.

That’s the one— Loyalty. You were so obviously in love with the eldest Haitani but for him, because of the promise you made, you refused to tell him who you were talking to. All because— “I didn’t want you to get hurt.”

Oh, how his heart sings at those words. Sanzu considers himself a loyal guy, especially to Mikey. He would rather die before he let anything happen to him, it’s hard to find that in others. Especially in potential lovers everybody lies, betrays— Nobody knew loyalty anymore.

You have morals, a good head on your shoulders, your kind and compassionate. You were his better half. Who succumbed to Ran’s seduction.

Fuck.

This was never supposed to happen, you weren't supposed to be someone he craved. Especially since you feel so strongly for Ran, it's a losing game.

He pinches the bridge of his nose as he glares at his innocent paper work who had done nothing but exist. This was supposed to be finished before the afternoon meeting, however, he’ll just give it to Kokonoi. After all, paperwork has never been Sanzu’s strong suit. Perhaps a drive will help him clear his mind.

As he prepares to leave he catches a glimpse of himself in his window. An overly large window that gives him the perfect look out of Tokyo. The blaring lights and sounds of honking cars were somehow therapeutic to him. He's different compared to Ran, he doesn't think of himself as ugly or anything that will damage his self confidence but, Ran is Ran and Sanzu wasn't him.

He sees his scars first, diamond shaped memories that were permanent on his skin. They were always his most unique feature, as a child he disliked his scars. Always covering them refusing to let anyone else see his biggest insecurity. He does wonder how you would react to them, would you think they were weird? Be afraid? His hand softly caresses one side of his cheek before looking down at his hands, hands full of blood and sins. He would feel wrong touching you with these, he’d taint you. Corrupt you. Ruin you for anybody that came after him.

He’d make you cry, not on purpose but because that’s what he does. He hurts people and for a living too. He's quite... Good at it.

His stomach growls randomly snapping him out of his daydreaming. He lets out a noise of annoyance before grabbing his keys from the desk. Sanzu heads to the parking garage where he holds his car, an all black Audi RS7 with heavily tinted windows. A gift from his eldest brother, Sanzu will never admit it but he’s grateful that his brother is in his life. He just wishes he could’ve had a better relationship with his sister as well. Driving around, looking for a place to get food to satisfy his dramatic stomach he comes across a 24-hour convenience store that just so happen to be in your neighborhood.

How does he know it’s in your neighborhood? Well, Ran asked him to find where you lived not to long ago and it kind of stuck with him. He didn’t necessarily indeed to end up here but there’s nothing he can do about it now. He supposed that he’s involved so deeply with you that subconsciously he seems you out. He parks by the sidewalk directly across the store, just before getting out he remembers to put on his mask.

As a wanted criminal you could never be too careful. As he gets out his car he waves his hand up to signal he’s crossing to ongoing cars.

As he came to open the door he felt something crash against his chest— A body.

“Oh god! I am so sorry sir—” The rambling was cut off when he felt the world stop around him, it was you. Your hair slightly messy in your pajamas with fluffy slippers. A slight blush ran across your face, clearly nervous and embarrassed.

“Sir?” You questioned as you looked up at him with your doe eyes that seemed to glisten in the early morning light. He felt the time stop as he saw you. He wasn't expecting to see you face to face, not now— Shit. He's glad he wore his mask.

“Don’t worry about it.” He flashes you a smile with his eyes before opening the door. “Ladies first.” You send him a small thank you, barely audible but he could tell by the way your lips moved, too shy to raise your voice. He did feel like a stalker, watching you through the cracks of the shelves. He wished you knew who he was, that you would call him name out like you had during the call. He felt his heart kick up in pace as you examined the ingredients on items you potentially wanted to buy.

So, you liked cookies and cream ice cream? He personally enjoyed mint chocolate chip but he wouldn’t mind trying your personal favorite. He grabbed items at random, not focusing on what he’s buying— just you.

After making his way to the register and placing his items on the counter, from the corner of his eye he saw you creep up from behind him. Feet shuffling as you held your items against your chest, your eyes looked down at your shoes refusing to acknowledge him. Which proven to be difficult, he stuck out like a wolf amongst sheep, bright pink hair, expensive suit that costs more than you’ve ever seen, and a mask that covered half his face. Sanzu looked behind him, his eyes smiled at you as he snatched the items from your hand.

“Oh, and these as well.”  Before you could protest he had shushed you and purchased everything. All you could do was stand still, star struck essentially. Surprised and extremely confused. Once he bought the items he handed them to you, including the items he had bought for himself. A ruffle to your head as you stared at him with a still face. He grabbed your hand that was frozen in place, he took the hook of the plastic bag and placing it on your hand more towards your fingers. He had to fight the urge to chuckle when he saw you struggle to speak. He waved goodbye leaving you there, confused. Just before leaving the store you had your head down, staring back at the ground before slightly yelling “Thank you sir!”

He turns back, pulling down his mask just enough for you to see his mouth and shined a smile your way. Your heart flustered at the sight of it, how kind his smile seemed. You shared his kindness by smiling back. Wide and cheerful— Now it was his turn to be star struck. He felt his ears heat up as the blood rushed to the tip, he quickly covered his face and left the store, preventing himself from snatching you up right then and there. His heart throbbed so fast he thought he was going to have a heart attack, his head spin as he couldn’t get the thought of you out of his head. With the slam if his car door he clenched his expensive suit, right over his heart as he hunched over. Head against the steering wheel as he squeeze the fabric in his hand. If this is how he dies, he wouldn’t mind it.

Now he sees why Ran chose you.

You found yourself on a park bench in a secluded area of the park, sitting beside Kisaki, it happened to be the same bench you used to frequent with the male during your time in college. Whenever you both just needed to get away or just needed to vent, this was your spot.

You couldn't help but feel nostalgic at the thought. It had been years since you've sat on this bench. "Do you remember the first time we sat here?" He questions, watching as a family walks by. You nod, of course. How could you forget? The image of Kisaki crying into your shoulder was forever burned into your memory, you'd never seen him that vulnerable before and you never have since then.

"Yeah, you came home and you just looked so out of it. I offered to go for a walk with you, to just clear your mind..." You trailed off, not wanting to bring up the memory. "And we ended up in this park, on this bench, and you let me cry to you about my breakup with Hana." You look up at him and he's smiling at you, his eyes no longer holding any sadness when he brings his ex of three years up.

A breeze blows past you causing a shiver to run down your spine. It doesn't go unnoticed by Kisaki, quickly pulling you into him. You welcome the warmth that he provides you, pressing yourself closer to him. "Do you remember the last time we were here?" You question while resting your head on his shoulder. You don't need to look at him to know there's a smirk plastered onto his face. "It was the night before graduation. We sat here, drank a few beers, promised to stay best friends, and then I had to carry your ass home because you fell asleep." He chuckles, no doubt picturing what it looked like to passersby with you passed out while he gave you a piggyback ride.

"I'm sorry." You blurt out. You feel him stiffen under you. "Why are you apologizing?" He questions, confused at your sudden confession. "We promised to stay best friends, but after Hanma...I unintentionally distanced myself from you." He lets out a sigh, before taking one of your hands in his. "You don't need to apologize, I get it. You associate me with Hanma and you just broke up with him, so naturally you'd take some time for yourself, I don't blame you. I never did." He gives your hand a soft squeeze and you can't help but wonder what you'd done in your past life to be surrounded by so many amazing people.

"But I knew you first. I shouldn't have let your friendship with him be an excuse to distance myself." Spending time with him alone tonight has made you realize just how much you'd missed him, missed your best friend. He clicks his tongue before pulling away so he could face you.

"Sweets, stop it. I'm not mad, I never was. I knew you needed space and I was happy to give you that. Our relationship isn't something that falls apart just because we don't speak to each other for a few months, we'll eventually find our way back to each other, so I wasn't worried about it. You know Hanma's been my best friend since childhood, we're pretty much a packaged deal, so I never took offense to it. So, don't worry your pretty little mind over it and let's just move on. Okay?"

A smile slowly makes its way across your face, he always knew what to say to stop your worrying. "Okay." He flashes you a smile and you can't help but feel a little better. "So what was this shitshow you were talking about?" He asks, tilting his head up to look at the stars.

You let out a sigh before leaning back onto the bench. "You remember Draken?" He looks at you through his periphery before nodding. "Blondie that came with you that day?" You let out a chuckle at the nickname. "Mmm, yeah him. Well it turns out he's my soulmate."

His eyes widen, he turns all his attention onto you. "Holy shit." You were still leaning into the bench, head tilted up to the night sky. "That's what I said. Long story short, I found out while I was helping him plan his proposal to his girlfriend who's also my friend. I never told him, packed up my stuff and left for America, but the ache just got worse, I couldn't get out of bed Saki, but whenever I talked to him it would feel a little better. Well...our last convo, I told him the gist of everything, leaving out the detail that it was him, and he told me my soulmate had a right to know, so I got on a plane before I could chicken out, and now I'm here. But he realized I'm his soulmate at the same time and got on a plane to go to me. So, we missed each other."

He lets out a whistle and you can't help but roll your eyes. "That really is a shitshow, sweets." You softly elbow him in the side and you chuckle as he pretends to be in the worst pain of his life. "You're supposed to comfort me Saki!"

"I'm just calling it as I see it. From what I've seen of the short time I spent with you both, he obviously cares for you. And I know you care about him, even before you were aware of the mark. I think everything will work itself out, so don't stress yourself too much, okay? And just know that I'm here for you." You can't help but feel warmth spread in your chest, he always knew how to comfort you.

The rest of the night was spent with the both of you just reminiscing on the old days. And also for promises to spend more time together.

I love their little friendship. It's just so 🥰 And sorry that I made y'all like Kisaki. Lmao.

You glance over as you watch him devour the burger in front of him. You can't help but smile at how happy he looks. "Do I have something on my face?" He asks while grabbing a napkin to wipe at whatever imaginary crumb was on his face. You can't help but giggle at how adorable he was being. "No. I was just thinking that you look really happy to be eating that burger."

"Honestly? With everything that happened the last month and how shitty I was feeling, today's been the first day where I haven't felt that, and I get to spend time with you, so yeah, I'm happy." He responds which causes your heart to skip a beat, his confession was enough to have you feeling soft for him.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" He questions, it's only then do you notice the goofy smile you have on your face. "I feel the same way. It's been a long time since I've felt this good. It took a lot for me to go out with Kisaki the other day. But now, I feel like I could run a marathon or something." You respond while taking a sip of your drink.

"So what's the deal with you and Kisaki? I know he's one of your friends and he also introduced you to your ex but that's about it." You raise a brow at him. "Is someone jealous?" You tease which causes him to scoff and take another bite out of his burger. "I'm just messing with you Ken, we met in college, during our freshman year. It was one of our required classes and we got put in a group together for a project and we just hit it off. We got a place off campus together our sophomore year, and we've been best friends ever since. You know, except for the part where I made up excuses not to hang with him after I broke up with Hanma." You say while scanning his face for any indication of what he was thinking. Which was hard because he wasn't allowing any emotion to show on his face.

"Anyway, the whole reason we're here is because you promised me you'd tell me what you talked about with Em." You say while swiping a fry off his plate and popping it into your mouth. He rolls his eyes before taking a sip of his drink. "That's not the only reason we're here, I actually want to spend time with you. But to answer your question, me and Emma broke it off. We promised to stay friends and I'm going to make it up to her. Not only did I walk out on her to chase after you, I proposed to her hoping that it would kill the feelings I had for you."

You reach over to take one of his hands in yours. "I'm sorry for causing all of these problems. If I had only told you when I found out, we could have avoided all of this." You say, a hint of sadness in your voice. "Y/n. Don't apologize. You thought what you were doing was the right thing at the time. And I wasn't exactly thrilled at the idea of meeting my soulmate. I said some shitty things about it too. So I understand why you were so hesitant to tell me. You shouldn't feel bad about it." He gives your hand a squeeze, which helped to reassure you a bit.

"But I meant it when I said I'd make it up to you and prove that I'm worthy of at least taking you out on a date. I'm serious about us." You feel your stomach doing backflips, it was so refreshing to hear him tell you how much he wants to prove to you that he wants to be with you. "I'm serious about us too. But I don't want to rush. I know you haven't fully processed your breakup with Em, so I want to be respectful of that."

He smiles at you and you can tell he's thankful for your patience and understanding. "Let's get out of here?" You nod and he's already jumping up to help you out of your chair. You can't help but think about how you could get used to this.

How will things unfold when one is a hopeless romantic and believes in the idea of a soulmate while the other doesn't care for it and has already made up their mind not to give their soulmate a chance?

Draken finds himself standing awkwardly in front of the door to their shared apartment, he didn't know what to expect when he entered. He's just staring at the door, thoughts running through his mind of what to say but the thing is, he doesn't know what to say, because he didn't want to hurt her feelings, even though he knew it was unavoidable.

He was about to break up with the woman he's loved for almost a decade, it wasn't something that could be done so easily and it wasn't something he ever expected would happen. He lets out a sigh before unlocking the door. "It's now or never." He says to himself before entering their apartment.

"Em?" He calls out into the silent apartment, scanning the living room and kitchen, but not spotting her in either rooms. "In here." She calls out to him from their bedroom, the door ajar, as if calling him to enter.

He finds her wrapped up in their blanket, her back facing him. "Is it time for that talk?" Now that he's in the room with her, he can hear her sniffles, it broke his heart knowing that he caused her to feel that way and after their talk it would probably be worse.

He slowly makes his way to her side, dropping on his knees so that he's face to face with her. He's finally able to take in the state she's in, her hair a complete mess, eyes puffy from crying, and the tear streaks that stain her face. "So how was the flight?" She jokes trying to ease the tension between them both, he hated seeing her like this and knowing he was the cause of it made him feel terrible.

He lets out a sigh before running a hand through his hair. "Em. Are you okay? If you're not up for it, we can talk tomorrow. Did you eat? Are you hungry?" He immediately wants to do everything he can to make her feel better, if only to make up for how much of a shitty fiancé he's been...well soon to be ex-fiancé.

She shakes her head before sitting up to face him and wrapping the blanket around her shoulders. "No. It's best if we get this over with now." It was just like her to want to just rip the band aid off rather than waiting to do it later, it was one of the many traits he loved about her. "Okay. Let's talk." He says while taking a seat on the bed. It's silent between the two of them, Draken trying to figure out exactly what to say and Emma waiting for an explanation.

"Emma...I honestly don't know what to say. I've thought about it all the way here, while I was stuck at the airport, while I was on the plane, on the elevator ride up, and I still don't know what to tell you that will make this hurt any less. All I know is that I screwed up. I screwed up big time, I didn't want to admit my feelings and in doing so, I hurt you in the process even if it was never my intention to. I was a coward and a dumbass and all I can do is show you how sorry I am and I'll do everything I can to prove it to you and to make it right." He can tell she's trying her hardest not to cry again, she always scrunched her nose when she'd try to stop the tears from falling.

She finally looks into his eyes, not wanting to earlier because she knew if she did that she'd begin to cry, but now it was useless. "Did you ever think she was your soulmate? Did you have a clue?" She asks, eyes scanning his face for any indication that he was about to lie. He had a feeling she would ask him that, he knew it was inevitable. "Not exactly." He says while scratching the back of his neck. "I knew I had some feelings for her, but I wasn't sure what they meant. I thought if I just ignored them then they'd eventually go away. That's also why I wanted to propose, so that the feelings I had for her would disappear." Hearing himself say it out loud made him realize just how shitty his excuse was, he hated himself for it.

"And did they? After you proposed?" She asks, a hint of anger in her tone. He shakes his head, a sad smile appearing on his face. "They didn't. But I tried to ignore them and pretend they weren't there." She just nods, not really wanting to say anything, afraid she'd say something she didn't mean.

"I know there's something you want to say. So just say it. Whatever is on your mind. I don't care if you hurt my feelings or anything like that, I've hurt you enough, so I deserve it." He tells her, he wanted her to be mad at him, he hated how calm she was, it was scarier than her actually being angry.

"Why propose to me when you had feelings for another woman? Regardless if she was your soulmate or not. Why did you use me to try and forget those feelings? Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you come to me? We could have figured it out together! We probably could have saved myself from this heartbreak. I'd rather have been left as the ex-girlfriend instead of the ex-fianceé!"

She could barely see him now with the tears blurring her vision. Draken instinctively takes her in his arms, but unlike all the other times he's comforted her, this time she's pounding on his chest with her fists, but he wasn't going to let her go, he knew that's not what she needed or wanted right now, even with her protests. He knew that when she got like this she really just wanted to be held, but was just trying to put up a front. He just held her and let her cry as much as she needed to, when she had finally stopped, she relaxed into his arms.

"I'm sorry. I never meant to hurt you. And I know that's a dumb thing to say. I was stupid and afraid of confronting those feelings. I never should have let it get this far. I hurt you so much and there's nothing I can do about it, except show you moving forward how sorry I am and how much I care about you."

She finally pulls away from him to look at him. "I'm not going to lie and say that I'm not hurting, but I'm not going to be in denial either, we just weren't meant to be. And it's going to take some time but I know I'll eventually accept that. And you did hurt me, so I'll be looking forward to you trying to make it up to me, and just know it won't be easy." She replies which causes the male to exhale the breath he was holding in.

He knew she wouldn't hold a grudge towards him which he was grateful for because although they weren't going to be together anymore, she was someone he wanted to keep in his life because she was important to him.

"So...can we be friends?" He asks which causes her to chuckle. "I feel like even if I said no I wouldn't be able to get rid of you so easily. So, yes. We can." Finally, for the first time tonight, a genuine smile appears on both their faces, the moment quickly interrupted by the growl from Draken's stomach. Normally he'd be embarrassed but it caused her to break into laughter that he couldn't help but laugh along with her. "Yeah, let's order some dinner. I haven't had anything to eat either and I'm starving."

Anddd there's their talk. Lol. Idk how I feel about it?

What do yall think? And I know I said I'd be done by chapter 75 but yeah I don't think that's happening. Haha. So we're aiming for 80 chapters.
